Where is it made?
LaJeannette organics. works closely with a factory in North West Tunisia, what produces this organic and pure oil of the prickly pear seeds specially for us.
It is in July/ August that these organic prickly pears are growing. After handpicking them (with handshoes ofcourse) they extract the seeds out of it. This is done without any chemicals. They dry the seeds in the sun. To keep them good, they store them after in a cool and dark place till we call them to cold press for us a few liters of oil. So we always have super fresh and wonderful pure oil to fill up our bottles with. You need 1000 kg of prickly pears to can extract 1 milion of seeds (25 kg) to can produce 1 liter of oil. That makes it the most precious and luxery oil in the world. |

The history of Prickly Pear Seed Oil
the hidden gem with an abundance of health benefits
The prickly pear cactus is a fascinating plant and its wonderful beauty and health benefits have created a recent surge in popularity. But its usage is not new. Traditional Chinese medicine and indigenous populations from all around the world have known about the potentials of prickly pears for many centuries. Eating prickly pear cactus leaves can lower cholesterol and blood sugar, the fruits are a delicious snack aswell as a healthy source of anti-oxidants/ minerals and its seeds have been used to make flour and treat inflammation of the skin.
To the Aztecs, the people who lived in Mexico hundreds of years ago, the prickly pear cactus was a sacred plant. It is said that they built the capital of their rich civilization where they saw a majestic eagle eat a snake on top of a prickly pear cactus. Their first and only capital city was therefor called ‘Tenochtitlàn’, which means: ‘place of the prickly pear cactus’. Nowadays, this place is called Mexico City and the Mexican flag still depicts a prickly pear cactus with an eagle and a snake on top, signifying hope and endurance. Similar to the Aztecs, the indigenous Navajo of the American state Arizona give great reference to the prickly pear cactus. Everytime they harvest the fruits (‘tula’), they offer one of their hairs in sacrifice to the spirit of the prickly pear cactus. So why does the prickly pear cactus symbolize hope and resilience for the people of Northern and Central America? The answer lies within its adaptive and versatile nature. As mentioned before, the prickly pear cactus shows some very unique characteristics for a plant that is known for growing in dry places. |
The prickly pear cactus, or ‘opuntia’ is one of few plants to grow in great abundance on dry soil. The opuntia can reproduce itself because it is both male and female at the same time. Apart from that, it is particularly good at retaining water, the stem acts like a reservoir and the thickness of the pads ensures little loss of moisture. You could say that the prickly pear cactus is an entire ecosystem in itself. The result is that it offers both food, medicine and a source of fresh water for people who live in otherwise nutrient-poor areas, such as the deserts of Arizona and Mexico. And seen as it grows in copious amounts, it is both a gift that keeps on giving AND a true life-saver!
You might ask yourself at this point than why the prickly pear seed oil derived from its fruits is relatively pricy. Similar to the water it stores, the prickly pear cactus produces copious amounts of nutrients, but it does so in a highly concentrated manner. Every prickly pear seed contains about 5% of oil. This means you need about 1 million seeds out of 1000kg of fruit to obtain 1 liter of oil. Extracting this oil, just like any other, requires a long careful process that starts from hand extraction to machines created precisely for prickly pear seed oil extraction. But sitting through this process pays off, and that’s why we do it. However, our oil isn’t pressed in America, but in North-Africa, where the composition of the soil and the quality of its fruits produce an even higher concentration of beneficial nutrients for the skin. The result is a cold-pressed and completely organic oil that is extremely rich in essential fatty acids, omega-6 (linoleic acid) omega-9, the natural antioxidant vitamin E (150% more than argan oil), and amino acids. All of these put together give it the magical power of helping you get rid of many (if not all) the skin problems you may have. That explains it all, doesn’t it? Inge van Schooneveld |
